Married Life
WHEN JERRY AND I were first married, I had made my name in the theater and ended up having a career for twenty years. I was hired for anything I really wanted, and there came a time when I didn’t have to audition because I was wanted. It was a wonderful time.
A lot of the people I knew and worked with have passed on. It was another time and another world. If I say my first Broadway show was Fiorello! some people don’t even know who Fiorello La Guardia was, let alone what Fiorello! was. To this day many people don’t even know that Jerry sang. They only know him from Dirty Dancing or the twelve years he had on Law & Order. They don’t even know he was the voice of Lumiere in Disney’s animated film Beauty and the Beast.
But while Jerry was working on Broadway or on Law & Order, home was where I wanted to be. I kept up with voice lessons and kept in shape, and I have for over thirty years now. Sure, I was being offered jobs out of town, but being away from Jerry was not an option.
Jerry and I were content to be by ourselves, at our cozy home in New York, without the usual trappings of fame. We didn’t have a super fancy car or a driver or a housekeeper. I loved cooking and cleaning the house and watering the plants—things I could never do when I was working. Don’t get me wrong, we went out to the SAG and Emmy Award shows, and Jerry had a great time when he sang at the Oscars for Beauty and the Beast. And we enjoyed going on cruises when Jerry was the guest celebrity. But we were mostly contented just to be with each other and our beloved kitties, Sammy and Bootsie, which we adopted from one of our favorite charities, Bideawee.
Professionally, Jerry didn’t need people taking care of him. He could always do it better. He never had a publicist. As his celebrity grew because of Law & Order, he enjoyed the publicity. But having only Saturday and Sundays together, we preferred to just snuggle up with me on the couch in front of the TV rather than have a big night out on the town.
We never owned a home in the city, we rented. We talked about buying a home, but we had a beautiful apartment facing the Hudson River on the 20th floor. Apartment 20A gave us glorious sunsets and was spacious enough for us. Every time we went looking to buy an apartment, something was always in the way of the view; another building or something. We went back to view an apartment a second time and something was amiss, especially after going home and sitting in our apartment and thinking, “We’ve got a better one.” We wanted to stay on the West Side close to his club and Broadway.
